France To Play Belgium In Davis Cup Championship This Weekend On Tennis Channel




Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Headlines Final Against Top-Ranked David Goffin in Lille, France


Tennis Channel will provide exclusive, live coverage of the 2017 Davis Cup championship between France and Belgium in Lille, France, this weekend, beginning Friday, Nov. 24, at 8 a.m. ET. Top-ranked David Goffin leads Belgium as it attempts to win its first Davis Cup against France which, with nine titles, is one of history’s most successful tennis nations. Goffin, who earlier this year became the first Belgian man to enter the ATP Top 10 rankings, will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for the first time since losing to the French star in the final at the Rotterdam Open in the Netherlands in February. Tsonga has the career upper hand, holding a 4-2 record against Goffin.


The year-end championship competition will consist of two singles matches Friday, Nov. 24, at 8 a.m. ET, followed by the doubles match Saturday, Nov. 25,at 8 a.m. ET. Tennis Channel’s coverage concludes with the remaining singles play Sunday, Nov. 26, at 7:30 a.m. ET. Each of the five matches is worth one point, with the team that wins at least three points winning the Davis Cup title.


France and Belgium have faced each other seven times in Davis Cup play, with France holding a 4-3 advantage. The French have won the two most recent competitions, in 2001 and 1999, and are bidding to claim their 10th Davis Cup crown, which would put them in third place on the list of championships won. Belgium has not defeated France on French soil since 1952.

The French team comes into the competition after an impressive 3-1 victory over Serbia in Lille, France. France’s captain Yannick Noah will lead Tsonga, Nicolas Mahut, Lucas Pouille and Pierre-Hugues Herbert this weekend.


Belgium enters this weekend’s championship for the second time in three years after a 3-2 win over Australia in its semifinal. The nation was runner-up in 2015 and 1904. Belgium is captained by Johan Van Herck and features Goffin, Steve Darcis, Lefty Ruben Bemelmans and Arthur De Greef.
