“My first love was basketball and I wanted to play pro. I was about 15 years old when my mother told me that she didn’t think I could make it because I was too short. I, unfortunately, believed her. I never listened to someone that told me no again. I started looking around for a sport to play. Well, that sport became tennis. I watched Michael Chang win the French and he was a shorter fellow. That gave me all the evidence I needed. I always played team sports growing up and Iwanted a change. I wanted something more one on one. Singles was my love. It was like boxing, but without the direct violence. I started training at some academies in Los Angeles, while also on my dad’s court. I started late but I was learning fast. I was top 30 in Southern California at this time. I was driven to keep improving. I then moved to Sweden, around 1991, to play tennis full-time because my favorite player was Edberg and I had a friend that lived there. This is actually how I got into music. I broke my wrist snowboarding and it led to me finding other interests. I tried to get back into tennis, but I got so much more attention from doing music, it was tough to go back. I played here and there, but for about 15 years, I didn’t pick up a racquet. Once I got on tour with LMFAO, I started playing tennis again with my DJ. We started battling and it reminded me of my love for this sport. It’s not just that I’m a fan, I am a player first. It’s truly an obsession just like it was with music. I could tell you about every rapper. I knew every aspect of their songs, even which snare and drum they used. That’s what tennis gives me. It’s one of the few things I do in my life that is just for me. I’m obsessed with improving and just learning how to win. I would go out and just drop feed myself. I used to walk around with my tennis racquet everywhere for at least three years. People used to make fun of me all the time. They’d say, “There he is with his racquet, you know there is no court around here?” I’ll go out and practice my kick serve alone. It’s my meditation time. For me, it’s a martial art. One day I would love to get my first ATP point and entertain people by the way I play.” -Redfoo
