Stefanos Tsitsipas saved a match point out-dueling Andrey Rublev 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(6) at the ATP Finals in London.
Andrey Rublev double faulted on match point at 6-5 in the tiebreaker and said afterward: “In general, this kind of match are really painful, and doesn’t matter if it was double or it was winner from him or mistake from me.”
Defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas leveled his round-robin record at 1-1 and will face Rafael Nadal on Thursday with the winner qualifying for the semifinals.
“We learn with our mistakes, so it’s gonna give me a lot and it’s great lesson, so we will see how I will use it in the future,” said Andrey Rublev afterward.
Stefanos Tsitsipas on facing Rafael Nadal for a semifinal spot: “I know it will require a lot of physical effort, and I’m going to have to go through a lot of pain and suffering, so it is going to be difficult match.”
Dominic Thiem fought off Rafael Nadal 7-6(7), 7-6(4) raising his round-robin record to 2-0.
“He played I think an amazing match, and I played well too. So my feeling is not negative,” said Rafael Nadal after bowing to Dominic Thiem for the second time this season.
Dominic Thiem called his win over Rafael Nadal “definitely one of the better matches I have played so far in my career.”
Rafael Nadal dropped to 1-1 in round-robin plan and must defeat defending-champion Stefanos Tsitsipas on Thursday to advance to the semifinals.
Dominic Thiem has won five straight tiebreakers vs. Rafael Nadal, including his quarterfinal conquest at the Australian Open in January.
