Daniil Medvedev, who surprised Alexander Zverev hitting an underhand serve at 4-3 in the second set, became the first Russian to win a singles match at the ATP Finals since 2009 champion Nikolay Davydenko.
Alexander Zverev struggled on second serve clanking seven double faults and winning just four of 19 points played on his second serve.
Despite losing to Daniil Medvedev for the third time in their last four meetings, Alexander Zverev still leads their head-to-head series, 5-3.
