Rome

Singles - Second Round: (1) Victoria Azarenka def. Shahar Peer 6-1 6-2
Victoria Azarenka remains #1; Shahar Peer remains below #50.
Oddly enough, after this extremely efficient win, Azarenka pulled out of the event, citing a shoulder injury. Presumably it's precautionary....

Singles - Second Round: Petra Cetkovska def. (3) Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4 4-6 6-1
Another shot at #2 lost by Agnieszka Radwanska. She will remain #3, and Maria Sharapova will be #2. Petra Cetkovska could rise as high as #26.

Singles - Second Round: (5) Samantha Stosur def. Sara Errani 6-3 7-5
Sara Errani will be no better than #23, but of course that's good enough to earn her one of the Top 24 Roland Garros seeds.

Singles - Second Round: Anabel Medina Garrigues def. (6) Caroline Wozniacki 6-4 4-0 retired (upper respiratory illness)
Yesterday, we thought Anabel Medina Garrigues would merely be a Roland Garros alternate. With this, she clinches a seed. And she creates a real danger that Caroline Wozniacki won't even be the #8 Roland Garros seed. Talk about a hard fall.... At least it sounds as if she'll be healthy in time for Paris; she mentioned allergies in her explanation for this.

Singles - Second Round: Julia Goerges def. (7) Marion Bartoli 6-3 6-1
A bad loss for Marion Bartoli going into Roland Garros -- but the loss by Wozniacki means that it won't matter much; Bartoli will be a Top Eight seed in Paris.

Singles - Second Round: (8) Li Na def. Iveta Benesova 6-1 7-5
Li Na keeps alive her hopes for the #8 Roland Garros seed, but she is still well behind Caroline Wozniacki.

Singles - Second Round: (9) Serena Williams def. Nadia Petrova 4-6 6-2 6-3
One more win just might put Serena in the Top Five. And she is the only seed left in her quarter.

Singles - Second Round: (12) Angelique Kerber def. Vania King 6-3 6-2
Angelique Kerber is now less than 300 points from the Top Ten.

Singles - Second Round: (13) Ana Ivanovic def. (Q) Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-2 6-1
It appears this will take Ana Ivanovic to #13. But she needs two more wins to rise to #12 and earn the #12 Roland Garros seed.

Singles - Second Round: (14) Dominika Cibulkova def. (WC) Karin Knapp 6-3 4-6 6-1
This moves Dominika Cibulkova past Maria Kirilenko in the rankings, meaning that Cibulkova will almost certainly earn the #16 Roland Garros seed (and Kirilenko certainly won't).
Cibulkova was the beneficiary of Azarenka's withdrawal; she is the first player in the quarterfinal.

Singles - Second Round: Flavia Pennetta def. (Q) Sloane Stephens 6-2 6-3
One more win would very probably put Flavia Pennetta back in the Top Twenty.

Singles - Second Round: Sorana Cirstea def. Sofia Arvidsson 6-3 6-1
That score, sadly, is rather more typical of Sofia Arvidsson's clay results than was her first round score. For Sorana Cirstea, the win takes her to within one victory of the Top Forty.

Singles - Second Round: Chanelle Scheepers def. Marina Erakovic 5-7 6-1 6-2
This will take Chanelle Scheepers to around #45, but it means that Marina Erakovic won't clinch a Top Forty spot just yet.

Singles - Second Round: (WC) Venus Williams def. Ekaterina Makarova 7-6(9-7) 6-1
Ekaterina Makarova came into this match #37 in safe points, so she had an outside shot at a Roland Garros seed. That's obviously gone. Venus Williams is now above #60.

Doubles - First Round: Pennetta/Schiavone def. Groenefeld/Martic 6-3 6-4

Doubles - First Round: (WC) Camerin/Knapp def. Lisicki/Peng (Peng: left hand injury)

Doubles - Second Round: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Mattek-Sands/Mirza 6-1 6-3
Sania Mirza's post-Elena Vesnina career continues to be pretty troubled....

Rome

Singles - Second Round: (2) R Nadal def. F Mayer 6-1 7-5

This will drop Florian Mayer well below #30. This probably means no Roland Garros seed; he's going to be a spot or two below the cutoff. For Rafael Nadal, this keeps alive his hopes for a return to #2. But the news wasn't all good:

Singles - Second Round: (3) R Federer def. C Berlocq 6-3 6-4

A fairly big win for Roger Federer, because it means that Rafael Nadal now needs a Rome final to have any chance at the #2 Roland Garros seed. Carlos Berlocq loses his rather faint seeding chance.

Singles - Second Round: (7) T Berdych def. L Kubot 6-4 6-1

Tomas Berdych moves back in front of David Ferrer in the contest for #6 -- but they are still very close to tied, and the one who lasts longer will get it.

Singles - Second Round: S Wawrinka def. (8) J Tipsarevic 6-3 6-1

Janko Tipsarevic still has a small lead in the contest for #8, but he is giving Juan Martin del Potro an opening.

Singles - Second Round: A Seppi def. (9) J Isner 2-6 7-6(7-5) 7-5

If we have all our eighteenth event scores right, this is going to cost John Isner his Top Ten spot and his position as the #1 American. Mardy Fish will regain at least the latter distinction and possibly the former as well. Andreas Seppi is now up to about #27, so his Roland Garros seed is secure.

Singles - Second Round: (10) J del Potro def. M Youzhny 6-4 6-2

Juan Martin del Potro stays in the hunt for the #8 Paris seed, although he will need more than this; see the Feature. Mikhail Youzhny looks good for a seed, but it will be below #24.

Singles - Second Round: (11) G Simon def. (Q) G Garcia-Lopez 6-4 2-6 6-4

If Gilles Simon can win two more matches, he might hit the Top Ten. But he has no real shot at the #8 Roland Garros seed, so it probably doesn't matter much in practice.

Singles - Second Round: (12) N Almagro def. (Q) S Querrey 7-5 6-2

Nicolas Almagro keeps alive his hopes for the #12 Roland Garros seed, but he's more than 300 points behind Gilles Simon. He will probably have to hope that Mardy Fish pulls out.

Singles - Second Round: (14) J Monaco def. R Stepanek 6-4 6-2

This means Radek Stepanek will be ranked no higher than #25 -- meaning he'll need a withdrawal to earn a Top 24 Paris seed.

Singles - Second Round: (16) R Gasquet def. (WC) P Lorenzi 6-3 6-2

Richard Gasquet keeps alive his hopes for a return to the Top Twenty, but he needs more than this; a Top 16 Paris seed appears almost impossible.

Singles - Second Round: M Granollers def. (WC) F Fognini 6-3 6-4

Marcel Granollers will almost certainly be a Top 24 Paris seed after this.

Doubles - Second Round: (2) Bryan/Bryan def. S Gonzalez/Kas 6-3 6-2

The Bryans aren't going to regain the #1 rankings this week, but the points they earn here could prove important at Roland Garros, where Mirnyi/Nestor have the title to defend.

Doubles - Second Round: (4) Lindstedt/Tecau def. Cabal/Schwank 6-4 6-3

Almost everyone likes to imagine their favorite team or their favorite player winning. As tennis fans we want to see our favorite players win the Slams and the Masters1000s(men) or Premier(women) events and this year, the Olympics. If you are a Djokovic fan, you are pulling for him to win a 4th Major in a row at Roland Garros and become the first man to hold all four titles since Rod Laver's second Grand Slam in 1969. Better yet, you are probably pulling for him to keep his streak in Majors going right through the US Open and even add a win in the Olympics which would give him the only men's "Golden Slam" in history, winning all four Majors and the Olympics in a single calendar year (Steffi Graf pulled off that feat in 1988 and she is the only person ever to do it.) But I think the vast majority of serious tennis fans are pulling for something else, especially after the results in Madrid last weekend.

If you were ever enchanted by the grace and beauty of a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance number; if you were ever transported to a distant land by the majesty of a John Williams overture; if you were ever astounded by the Grammy winning performance of octogenarian pianist Vladimir Horowitz; if you appreciated the raw speed of Cassius Clay; if you were ever transfixed by the subtle intellectual twists and turns of a Rod Serling screenplay; if you felt goosebumps up and down your spine the first time you heard Whitney Houston's tremolo as she sings "I Will Always Love You"; if you can grasp the magnitude of Oscar Robertson averaging a "triple-double" for four consecutive years; if you can appreciate Ted Williams batting .388 at age 40; geez, if you even know half the names I'm bringing up here (kids, you really should Google them; and you already know who John Williams is, even if not by name)… then there is a better than 50% chance that you are pulling for Roger Federer to reclaim the number one ranking.

Roger is just one week short of tying Pete Sampras's 286 weeks ranked in the top spot. If you went back just 6 months with the Swiss magician presumably still recovering from a 5th set loss to Djokovic at the US Open in which the Serb escaped double-match point on Federer's serve, no one was even thinking about the possibility of Federer recapturing number one; well, perhaps there was one person. In fact, there were some who were calling on him to retire before he "embarrassed" himself. But he went on a tear in the last six months, winning 3 of 5 ATP1000s, the ATP World Tour Finals and 3 additional ATP500s. Despite a tough semifinal loss to Nadal at the Australian, he is within hailing distance of Djokovic in the Year-to-Date Race To London, trailing by just 455 points. If we measured performances for the 8 months since that psychologically devastating loss at the US Open, Federer's deficit in the Year-to-Date Race to Djokovic would turn into a lead of 1985 points. And Nadal would be even further behind.

Breakdown of the Post US Open 2011 Results

In the weeks following the US Open in 2011, Djokovic earned just 560 points, Nadal just 730 including the Davis Cup semifinals, but Federer earned 3000. Nadal's 150 points for the Davis Cup finals are included in his 2012 Year-to-Date Race points total. Davis Cup results are a little confusing. They award 40 points for first round wins, 65 points for quarterfinal wins, 70 points for semifinal wins and 75 points for finals wins. By my reckoning, Ferrer has won 7 matches in the last 12 months, but I think they only count one quarterfinal round of matches in the annual ranking calculation. The 2012 South African Airways Year-to-Date Race to London totals for the top three are Djokovic-4320, Federer-3865, Nadal-3750. Andy Murray picked up 1930 points in 2011 after the US Open with his three victories on the Asian circuit and he would jump David Ferrer by 250 points in this post-US Open performance measure.

10sChiro's Post US Open Performance Measure Points Breakdown

1. Roger Federer 6865 (3000 in post US Open 2011 + 3865 in 2012)

2. Novak Djokovic 4880 ( 560 in post US Open 2011 + 4320 in 2012)

3. Rafael Nadal 4480 ( 730 in post US Open 2011 + 3750 in 2012)

4. Andy Murray 4080 (1930 in post US Open 2011 + 2150 in 2012)

5. David Ferrer 3830 (1610 in post US Open 2011 + 2220 in 2012)

Roger's win at Madrid last week thrust him ahead of Rafael Nadal into 2nd place in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, both for the last 52 weeks and for the year to date. True, he is a slim 325 points ahead of Nadal in the year-long rankings and a Nadal victory in Rome will put him back in 2nd regardless of how far Roger goes in Rome. Djokovic seems somewhat less invincible than he did the first 9 months of last year with critical loses to Isner at Indian Wells and Tipsarevic last week. (Reaching the finals of Monte Carlo the week his grandfather died has to be considered a heroic effort.) Novak still holds a 1770 point lead over Federer and you would think he has the most points to defend, but it is actually Nadal who has a the most to defend in the next 8 weeks including Roland Garros and Wimbledon. The reports from Daily Tennis bring you up-to-date rankings moves on a match by match basis. But I want to emphasize what is at stake each week for these top players. In particular, I want to play the "what if" game to see how Roger Federer can recapture the top ranking. I hope he decides to play in Rome. I'm writing this Tuesday night and there is still some question as to whether Federer will show for his 2nd-match-on-after-12 appointment with Carlos Berlocq Wednesday afternoon. At the same time, I don't want to see him jeopardize the opportunity that lays before him by overplaying. There are two Majors coming up quickly and he must maintain the focus on preparing for those events.

Clearly, what few imagined was even possible after that US Open loss, is definitely within reach, if not in the next 8 weeks, certainly over the next 17 weeks until the US Open ends on September 9. While Roger may be a little beat up by his long final with Berdych in Madrid, his physicality seems very much intact and his level of confidence and match toughness seems to be growing with every victory. He will not win every match from here to the US Open, but it's not necessary for him to retake the top spot in the rankings. A good combination of wins, finals and semifinals that keeps him just within 1984 points of Novak Djokovic or 2384 points of Rafael Nadal through the US Open will earn him the number one ranking, and probably for more than one week. The indoor season could correctly be considered Roger's best season, but with an additional 800 point opportunity on grass in the Olympics, the next four months should be a great time for Roger. The way he has been playing more aggressively with his backhand and moving forward into the court at every opportunity sets him up even better than usual for an expanded grass court season.

Surely, winning Majors comes first. But for him to accomplish the recapture of the number one ranking at this time in his career would be awesome. I trust Annacone will keep Roger focused on the important goals and not let him get too greedy in the pursuit of the "damn points". He must stick to his disciplined approach, only playing events that allow his body enough time to recover and be the most durable player in the history of the modern game. His ability to maintain his mental and psychological enthusiasm is just as important as his physical recovery from all the little aches and pains that come with so many matches. One could really question if there was something more to the Men In Black III suit Will Smith presented to Roger after the Madrid final. I was thinking Roger should have asked if it came with a "neuralizer", but he already has tools he uses to erase all the bad memories: a positive attitude and an infinite work ethic.

************************************

Just so you can play the "what if" game the next few weeks, here are the tournaments the top three will be involved in over the next 8 weeks, as well as the points they are defending and the points that are available in each of these events.

Rome

No points to defend. They are already off the computer.

Winner-1000; Runner-Up-600; Semifinalist-360; 1/4's-180; 16's-90; 32's-45; 64's-10

After an off week for these three,

Roland Garros

Points to Defend: Djokovic-720; Federer-1200; Nadal-2000

Winner-2000; RUp-1200; Semis-720; 1/4s-360; 16s-180; 32s-90; 64s-45; 128-10

Halle (all three are entered in Halle at this time)

Points to Defend: Just Nadal with 45 from Queens

Winner-250; RU-150: Semis-90; 1/4s-45; 16s-20; 32s-0

Wimbledon

Points to Defend: Djokovic-2000; Federer-360; Nadal-1200

Winner-2000; RUp-1200; Semis-720; 1/4s-360; 16s-180; 32s-90; 64s-45; 128-10

In total, the maximum available is 5250 points. Djokovic has 2720 to defend. Nadal 3245 to defend. And Federer with his off year at Wimbledon last year as well as missing Halle, one of his favorites, has just 1560 points to defend. Murray won Queens last year and with his semis at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, has 1690 points to defend. Ferrer has just 360 points to defend with 16s at RG and Wimby and should move up in the 52 week rankings. Tsonga has 960 to defend. Berdych just 190.

I don't know why the ATP hasn't played up this contest more than they have. This could be one of the most exciting races in years. First, to see if Roger can get back to number one and second, to see who can earn the ultimate number one ranking for the year. We will keep you posted periodically here on 10sBalls.com

10sChiro's Post US Open Performance Measure Points Breakdown

Just to repeat, here it is

If Roger can just stay close in the next few weeks before Wimbledon…

Let's cheers Madrid for committing to the blue clay and providing tennis with a jolt of outside attention. Personally, I liked the color and thought visibility was great. How fitting that Roger Federer took down the title too huh? Years ago, when the tennis ball color changed from white to yellow, traditionalists might have disagreed. And even further, when Penn started making ATP Masters' light green balls, people may have disagreed. I'd say embrace the change, just as the balls, rackets, and equipment has, the game has only grown and gotten better in the long run. If it can attract mass appeal like: "Oh wouldn't it be cool to go play on a blue clay court?!?" - even better!! We hope you've enjoyed 10sballs.com's coverage and photos of the blue clay too!

It's heard that Rome is known to have the slowest clay courts (in the world). I've practiced on them personally and I can agree with this rumor. Their red clay there seems to stick more, seems to grip the ball and conditions can feel heavy and sluggish. Just ask John Isner who looked like he went 15 rounds with a gorilla after his three-set loss to hometown favorite Andreas Seppi! Isner's serve was taken out of the equation and his movement was put to the test. Seppi simply remained constant and let Big John crash out. I sure hope that blister or cut on Isner's hand heals quickly because the amount of blood that was seeping out of there was not pretty! The clay has definitely worn out some players and it's evident that a few are feeling the fatigue. #8 seeded Tipsarevic also crashed out, losing to Warwrinka 6-3 6-1 even after his powerful performance in Madrid.

Who's eager to see the later rounds? It's been a while since the big 3 faced one another and given us yet another classic match right?? On Rome's slow clay, it's certain to be a great test for each if they can survive. Djokovic must be itching for a fight, he's endured some pretty tough losses and there's going to be a point where he snaps. You can see it in his eyes. He'll come raging back from the dead in a match or simply wear his body ragged in order to win a big match. It won't be pretty and we'll definitely see that explosion of emotion or rage equipped with fist pumps and heart-poundings. They are in Rome after all... Gladiators, 10sballs.com salutes you!

The International Tennis Federation announced that the Swiss-based company Sportradar AG has been chosen as the worldwide distributor for ITF Official Data. The four-year agreement will officially commence in 2013.

The ITF and Sportradar will begin to cooperate in 2012 to assure the supply of live data from selected ITF tournaments to media outlets, the betting industry and any other interested parties. The agreement will also allow the ITF to expand the range of its events offering live scoring services.

The ITF believes that the distribution of ITF Official Data will support integrity measures by helping to eliminate the unauthorized collection, dissemination and use of official or erroneous data and the presence of unofficial data collectors at ITF events. The supply of ITF Official Data will further support integrity measures by creating a framework for more extensive information exchange and cooperation with the legal gambling industry.

The ITF began the search for an experienced data partner in October 2011 and received a number of interesting and competitive offers, selecting Sportradar AG because of their experience as a leading sports data service provider.

In addition to the data partnership, Sportradar has also been appointed as the ITF’s preferred streaming partner for the ITF Pro Circuit, helping to grow the Circuit and make it more accessible to fans.

Former South African standouts Abe Segal and Gordon Forbes are less than pleased that Tennis South Africa has surrendered its right to stage its Davis Cup World Group play-off against Canada. Tennis Canada has accepted the right to host the September tie at an undetermined location

"I don't think too many of the 185 member nations of the International Tennis Federation, let alone a country with a proven history in the sport like SA, would have made a decision like this," Segal told South African Business Day. "Imagine Arsenal being drawn at home in a Cup tie against Manchester United and then requesting the match be staged at Old Trafford."

Forbes, who was once the president of the South African Tennis Association, said he sympathized with the Tennis SA administration "because I had personal experience of how difficult it has become to secure sponsorship for tennis in the country, and I'm sure they did their best".

Tennis SA has cited an inability to secure the required sponsorship money. The country also gave up its ATP sanction last year. "We tried everyone; the government, private sector, TV companies and affluent individuals who we hoped would be sympathetic," Tennis SA president Bongani Zonde said. "But no money was forthcoming."

Tennis SA's Ian Smith added that the organization is not bankrupt. "But our funds are strictly limited and we had to weigh up whether it was worth spending more money on the Davis Cup at the expense of development projects and such-like."

Segal said he was amazed that the country could not raise the necessary funds, which for a World Group play-off, would not be that steep. "SA was a force in world tennis in the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s and the sport was thriving in the country," he said. "We attracted the best players in the world to the country, instead of turning them away."

This will drop Florian Mayer well below #30. This probably means no Roland Garros seed; he's going to be a spot or two below the cutoff. For Rafael Nadal, this keeps alive his hopes for a return to #2. But the news wasn't all good...

Oddly enough, after this extremely efficient win, Azarenka pulled out of the event, citing a shoulder injury. Presumably it's precautionary....

Top-seeded Tina Karwasky of Glendale, Calif. played another near-perfect match to advance to the semifinals in the Women’s 60s division of the USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

La Jolla, Calif. - (May 16, 2012) – Top-seeded Tina Karwasky of Glendale, Calif. played another near-perfect match to advance to the semifinals in the Women’s 60s division of the USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

The 59-year-old Karwasky, who will turn 60 later this year, wasted little time in eliminating fifth-seeded Chieko Holt of Klamath Falls, Ore., 6-0, 6-0, in a quarterfinal match played on Court No. 1.

Karwasky has yet to lose a game in the tournament. After receiving a first-round bye earlier this week, she defeated unseeded Pricilla Sisson of Windsor, Colo., 6-0, 6-0, in the second round on Tuesday.

In her quarterfinal victory, Karwasky controlled the match from start to finish. She attacked Holt’s serve frequently throughout the afternoon as she approached the net off her own service return to set up a winning volley. The strategy helped Karwasky break Holt’s serve each time during the match, which took a little over an hour to complete.

“I was playing pretty good. My ground strokes were coming in nice and deep and I feel pretty comfortable on a hard court,” said Karwasky, who grew up playing on public hard courts in Los Angeles.

As the number one seed in the Women’s 60 division, Karwasky admitted feeling a little bit of pressure. “It always puts pressure on you to do well (as the top seed),” she said. “Everybody is watching you, especially when they put you on the center court. You just want to perform well.”

Playing at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is a special experience for Karwasky. “This is one of the most beautiful spots in all of the United States,” she said. “I’ve been coming here ever since I was a little kid when my mother used to play senior tournaments and she used to leave me at the beach to build sand castles.”

Karwasky, who played on the women’s professional tennis tour in the 1980s, will take on fourth-seeded Molly Hahn of Belmont, Mass. in a semifinal match on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. (PDT).

In other action, top-seeded Ros Nideffer advanced to Thursday’s semifinals of the Women’s 50 division as she defeated fifth-seeded Vicki Buholz of Dallas, Texas, 6-2, 6-2, in a morning quarterfinal match on Court No.1.

The 51-year-old Nideffer, a former touring tennis professional who lives in the San Diego community of Rancho Bernardo, needed nearly two hours to eliminate Buholz in a match highlighted by many long rallies and numerous deuce games.

Nideffer will face fourth-seeded Mariana Hollman of Winston Salem, N.C., in a semifinal match scheduled for Thursday at 12:30 p.m. (PDT).

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s 40th Annual Spring Senior Championships for men are also taking place the same week in conjunction with the women’s events. Although the men’s events are not national championships, they will feature many senior players who regularly compete in national tournaments. The men’s events will include singles and doubles for 60 and over, 65 and over, 70 and over, 75 and over and 80 and over age groups. A combined total of over 300 players are participating in the men’s and women’s tournaments.

Matches are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. through Friday, May 18 and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20. Women’s championship finals will take place on Friday. Men’s championship finals will be played on Saturday. Men’s and women’s consolation finals will be played on Sunday.

Admission to the week-long tournament is free and open to the public. A snack bar and dining facility will be available to spectators. On-site parking will also be available for a nominal fee. Draws will be posted at the Beach Club and will be available at following link: http://tennislink.usta.com/TOURNAMENTS/TournamentHome_New/Tournament.aspx?T=113672

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club started each of these events and has hosted them since inception. Designated one of the Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the world by Tennis Resorts Online, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club's reputation as a top tennis destination started in 1942 when it attracted its first major tournament, the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship. The Club’s staff includes Director of Tennis Conan Lorenzo and a variety of experienced United States Professional Tennis Association pros who offer a full range of lessons, clinics, camps and services.

In addition to hosting the USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club also hosts the USTA National Men’s & Women’s 40 & Over Hard Courts, and the USTA National Father & Son Hard Court Championships, scheduled for November 26 – December 2, 2012.

The USTA announced today that Nintendo has signed on as an Official Sponsor of the SmashZone Mobile Tour, the interactive tennis fan attraction which introduces children to tennis in a fun and engaging way.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., May 16, 2012 – The USTA announced today that Nintendo has signed on as an Official Sponsor of the SmashZone Mobile Tour, the interactive tennis fan attraction which introduces children to tennis in a fun and engaging way. As part of the agreement, Nintendo, the worldwide pioneer in the creation of interactive entertainment, will incorporate video game kiosks into the SmashZone experience throughout the duration of the tour. The partnership will launch at the California Strawberry Festival in Oxnard, Calif., on May 19 - 20.

This year’s SmashZone Mobile Tour will serve as a launching pad for Mario Tennis Open for the Nintendo 3DS hand-held system. Mario Tennis Open, a fun, portable tennis game that can be played in 3D without the need for special glasses, is scheduled for release everywhere on May 20, and this partnership provides an opportunity for an integrated fan experience where audiences can demo the new game.

SmashZone Mobile includes a 53-foot trailer, which anchors four kid-sized tennis courts for youth play. Courts feature games such as Xerox Rally Courts, Esurance Sweet Spot and Target Challenge. The trailer itself, which is handicap accessible, features interactive activities for visitors, including a TENNIS Magazine Green Screen Cover Shoot and touch screen kiosks. The Nintendo video game kiosks will be located in the game room of the trailer. Additionally, Nintendo brand ambassadors will be on site to provide hands-on demonstrations of Mario Tennis Open on the youth tennis courts.

“Video games can serve as a gateway to help get kids interested in real-life sports and activities,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “Mario Tennis Open features all their favorite Nintendo characters, and fast-paced tennis action that people will have fun experiencing.”

In addition, Nintendo will be an Official Sponsor of Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day presented by Hess, which will be held on August 25 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The sponsorship will enhance fans’ on-site experience by having in-person visits from Mario and Luigi from Mario Tennis Open and product demonstrations on the grounds during the free activity portion of Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day.

“We are thrilled to welcome industry leader and innovator Nintendo as an official partner,” said Kurt Kamperman, USTA Chief Executive, Community Tennis. “Their collaboration and support of the SmashZone Mobile Tour provides a tremendous opportunity to engage thousands of parents and children throughout the country.”

(Original Story: http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2012/05/20/Rome-Wednesday-Doubles-Bryans-Bounce-Back.aspx)

Second seeds and two-time former champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan bounced back from last week's opening-round loss at the Mutua Madrid Open with a 6-3, 6-2 victory Wednesday over Santiago Gonzalez and Christopher Kas at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome.

The American twins dropped just 10 points on their serves and converted four of 10 break point opportunities for victory in just 54 minutes on Court 1. They are now 24-9 lifetime at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament.

Bob Bryan admitted to ATPWorldTour.com, "We were pretty eager to get out there as it was a tough loss last week [to Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer].

"We worked hard the past five days and played extremely well. We capitalised on our break points and served well. It was a good match."

In the quarter-finals, they will next meet either fifth seeds Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek or Lukasz Kubot and Janko Tipsarevic. Paes and Stepanek beat the Bryans in the Australian Open final in January.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced the launch of an international tender process to find the host city for its year-end WTA Championships for 2014 and beyond.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced the launch of an international tender process to find the host city for its year-end WTA Championships for 2014 and beyond. The WTA’s year-end finale - with a global audience across 164 countries and a 40-year history of being hosted in a handful of iconic world cities - features the world’s top eight singles players and top four doubles teams competing for one of the most coveted titles in women’s tennis and a share of the multi-million prize money.

“The WTA Championships has gone from strength to strength over the past four decades, and is today recognized as one of a handful of truly blue chip international events on the world sporting calendar,” said Stacey Allaster, Chairman & CEO of the WTA. “Based on the significant demand by numerous cities around the world to invest in women’s tennis and host our year-end WTA Championships, we decided to launch an international bidding process to select a host city for 2014 and beyond. It’s a chance for some city somewhere to step up on the world stage. We are confident that through this process we will be able to identify the right city to become the next partner for the world’s premier sporting event for women.”

In order to showcase the best of women’s tennis to fans around the world, continuously expand the sport, and grow its value and fan base, the WTA has had a successful strategy of rotating its year-end Championships to different global markets. The WTA’s season-ending crown jewel has held in only a handful of world class cities including New York, Los Angeles, Munich, Madrid, Doha and Istanbul where it will remain through 2013..

The WTA chose the London-based international sports marketing agency, The Sports Consultancy, to manage the Championships bid process, which will commence with requests for Expression of Interest sent to prospective host cities that are required to respond by June 29, 2012. Interested parties will receive a Bid Guide, formal Bid Application and Questionnaire that must be submitted by September 21, 2012. A short list of potential Candidate Cities will be announced in October 2012, with a final decision made in March 2013.

Andy Murray was pleased with his 25th birthday win over David Nalbandian which got him off to a good start in Rome - but the Scot then began to wonder what other surprises were ahead for him on the big day.

"I hope they (his travel team) have something planned back at the hotel, I don't know yet I haven't opened my presents, but I hope they've got something for me," he said after outlasting Nalbandian in two and a half hours 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

A linesman tried to spoil the cheer by calling Murray out for swearing, which was reported to the chair umpire and resulted in a warning, a common practise.

"I swear on court regularly. I try not to, but sometimes you forget where you are," said the Scot. "I know it's a mistake, but I also understand a lot of what he (Nalbandian) said from my time in Spain.

"But because what we say is in English we're the ones who get the warning. I think what came out of my mouth today was not as bad as the translation of some of the things that he said but, it's not right, regardless."
