© "DAILY TENNIS NEWS WIRE"

The eternal question in Fed Cup is, who will show up? That goes at least double for Russia, since they are incredibly strong when at full strength but can get weaker fast.

This year, when they are hosting Spain, they have a mixed bag. They have Maria Sharapova (assuming she can bounce back from the Australian Open), but their other Top Ten player, Vera Zvonareva, isn't planning to attend. So Svetlana Kuznetsova is their #2, with Nadia Petrova and Ekaterina Makarova expected to play doubles.

Of course, Spain isn't at its best either. Anabel Medina Garrigues isn't playing. That put most of the weight of expectations on Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez -- but she missed the Australian season and had to withdraw after the initial lineups were released. The rest of the team is Carla Suarez Navarro, Arantxa Parra Santonja, and Nuria Llagostera Vives. Silvia Soler-Espinosa got the call after Martinez Sanchez pulled out -- and is now listed as playing #2 singles behind Suarez Navarro. The Russians are the clear and strong favorites, but there are players on their team who are amazingly good at making life tough for themselves.

Belgium and Serbia, who will face each other in Belgium, also feature teams missing a key player each. Belgium lacks Kim Clijsters; Serbia is without Ana Ivanovic, who cites illness. Belgium does have Yanina Wickmayer, but the rest of the team is Kirsten Flipkens, Tamaryn Hendler, and Alison Van Uytvanck (who, after a meteoric career in Challengers a couple of years ago, has turned human). Serbia's team is headed by Jelena Jankovic, but her backups are slumping Bojana Jovanovski, Aleksandra Krunic, and Natalija Kostic. Frankly, we haven't a clue what to expect from that.

Italy, which will host the Ukrainians on indoor clay, is out in force: Francesca Schiavone, Flavia Pennetta, Sara Errani, and Roberta Vinci. Interestingly, the Italians chose to play Errani rather than Pennetta in singles; Pennetta is having back troubles again. It probably won't matter. The poor Ukrainians have only Kateryna Bondarenko, Lesia Tsurenko, Olga Savchuk, and Yuliya Beygelzimer. If there is a 5-0 sweep in World Group I, that's likely to be it.

The tie between Germany and the Czechs, being hosted by the Germans on an indoor hardcourt, may be the most interesting of all. The Czechs have the top player in the tie in Petra Kvitova. But the Germans, with Sabine Lisicki, Julia Goerges, and Angelique Kerber (plus Anna-Lena Groenefeld for doubles) are clearly the deeper team. The Czechs have three good doubles players in Iveta Benesova, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, and Lucie Hradecka, but no obvious #2 singles player (they settled on Benesova). So it is quite likely that Kvitova will win both her singles matches, the Germans both of the others, and that it will come down to the doubles. The Czechs certainly have the advantage there, but it's a very thin margin.

Serena Williams clearly is planning for the Olympics. Hence her decision to play for the Americans, even though they are stuck in World Group II. Venus Williams also hopes to return to action there; she is said to finally be fit. Christina McHale, the best of the young Americans, is also on the team, with Liezel Huber for doubles. They will be playing Belarus -- which has Victoria Azarenka, but not much else. The rest of that team is Anastasia Yakimova, Olga Govortsova, and Darya Kustova. If the Williams Sisters are on their games, the Americans should win. But are they on their games?

Japan's team is probably deeper than the Slovene team it will be hosting, but the Slovenes have the top player in Polona Hercog. Their problem is that the supporting cast is Petra Rampre, Nastja Kola, and Andreja Klepac. Their captain Maja Matevzic, if she could stay healthy, might still be somewhat better than her players.... Japan will answer with Ayumi Morita, Kimiko Date-Krumm, Kurumi Nara, and Rika Fujiwara.

The Slovaks, who will be hosting France, have their two big guns, Dominika Cibulkova and Daniela Hantuchova; Magdalena Rybarikova and Jana Cepelova round out the team. France doesn't have Marion Bartoli; they will have to rely on Pauline Parmentier, Virginie Razzano, Alize Cornet, and Kristina Mladenovic (a late replacement for Aravane Rezai). Talk about a struggling lineup of once-strong players.... The current plan is for Parmentier and Razzano to play singles.

The good news for Switzerland is that they're supposed to have Timea Bacsinszky back. But if she is able to play, she will surely be covered with rust -- and the rest of the team is Stefanie Voegele, Amra Sadikovic, and Belinda Bencic. Australia will answer with Samantha Stosur, Jarmila Gajdosova, Jelena Dokic, and Casey Dellacqua. That sounds like a sweep.

Roger Federer night not mark the occasion personally, but tennis stat-keepers have noted that it was exactly eight years ago this week that the Swiss began his phenomenal run of form which carried him into tennis history.

In February2, 2004, Federer claimed the ATP No. 1 ranking (from Andy Roddick) for the first time, holding it for a record 237 weeks in a row and a total of 285 overall - that's one shy of the 286 of Pete Sampras.

Federer, 30, has been shut out of a return to the top since losing the pacesetter position to Rafael Nadal in June, 2010, followed by Novak Djokovic, who seized the top ranking last July, sending Federer to third.

Djokovic, who began his season with another Australian Open title, still has a huge task if he's to defend ten titles from 2011. He leads Nadal by 2,800 points with many to defend in the next few months: Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome and Belgrade.

Nadal is taking February off to rest while Federer is playing Davis Cup, Rotterdam and Dubai this month with chances to close the points gap on his longtime Spanish rival.

"We have had good matches over the years, I enjoy playing him," Federer said of Nadal, who beat him in an Australian Open semi-final and then lost the final to Djokovic in an historic six hours.

"The crowd really gets into it, which is nice. We have a lot of respect for each other, which is good, too. I hope it inspires future generations or other players, you know, being nice to each other on the court.

"We play well against each other. I always think he plays a bit better against me than against other players, but that's good for him."

6 days gone but still the hangover persists! For me and I am sure many of the fans out there, it was the best Australian Open of the decade.

6 days gone but still the hangover persists! For me and I am sure many of the fans out there, it was the best Australian Open of the decade. Never have I seen a Grand Slam with such heroic battles, brilliant comebacks and above all a test of stamina, determination and endurance of the top athletes.

As Roger Bannister rightly said: "The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win."

Wasn’t it what we witnessed as Australian Open culminated with the biggest battle in a GS?

So I thought let’s take a look back at the top 5 inspiring moments during the first GS of the year 2012:

5) Company Matters: Just one month back, Andy Murray was a player whose anger management issues, on the court were more popular than his achievements on the court. But with the arrival of Ivan Lendl in Murray’s camp, things seem to have worked for this immensely talented Scot as he showed us his fighting attitude for the first time during the SF against Djokovic. It was really difficult to imagine such a huge transformation in a matter of 2 week’s time. But that’s the lesson to be learnt: Surround yourself with positive minded people, whom you respect for their special qualities, you will be changed!

“Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher”- Oprah Winfrey

4) Irrelevance of Pressure: There are two types of people in this world- One who succumbs to pressure and the other who rise high in the same circumstances. Sam Stosur and Bernard Tomic in my mind are the perfect example of the above respectively. Bernard Tomic’s victory over Verdasco in five sets after being two sets down was a lesson to the tennis world that pressure will be a factor only if you think it to be one.

“Everything negative - pressure, challenges - is all an opportunity for me to rise”- Kobe Bryant

3) Just one more step – If you are 4 match points down against a top 5 player, why would you even think of trying? But Kim Clijsters taught us that taking that one more step in the right direction instead of quitting can lead to victory in the end.

“They quit on the one yard line. They give up at the last minute of the game, one foot from a winning touchdown and that’s why they lose” – Ross Perot

2) Never Give Up: There can be nothing better than to see a tennis player fight his heart out for his goals. There is a possibility that you might not reach the destination but every effort that you make takes you an inch closer. And who better a example than Rafael Nadal. His quest to win the mental battle against defying his body and mind was one of the features of Australian Open.

“Our achievements speak for themselves. What we have to keep track of are our failures, discouragements, and doubts. We tend to forget the past difficulties, the many false starts, and the painful groping. We see our past achievements as the end result of a clean forward thrust, and our present difficulties as signs of decline and decay.” – Eric Hoffer

1) Belief- The key to success: People who have accomplished great things in life have had a great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible. When the entire world talked about Fedal and how no one will be able to match them, Djokovic was silently getting prepared to prove everyone wrong. “I have to say that even though that he’s the best and everybody thinks that he’s unbeatable, I say he’s not unbeatable. He’s beatable, you know.”-Novak Djokovic after losing to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal of Roland Garros in 2006.

And look where he is now- 7 times in a row he has defeated Nadal!

“Magic is believing in yourself, if you can do that, you can make anything happen." Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

As newly inaugurated world no.1 and the female tennis’ most recently crowned Grand Slam champion, Victoria Azarenka realizes she has set herself up to be knocked down and appreciates there is still no more perilous task in tennis than to face the might of the Williams sisters.

Less than a week after lifting the Australian Open trophy at Melbourne Park following that emphatic final victory over Maria Sharapova, the 22 year-old from Minsk will lead Belarus against the United States in a Fed Cup playoff in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Although Serena Williams is currently suffering from an injured ankle she suffered in Australia and Venus has not played in a recognized match since last September’s U.S.Open, both remain part of American captain Mary-Joe Fernandez’s line-up and at least one of the sisters seems set to face Azarenka.

“They're both tough players,” said Azarenka. “They know how to play tennis and how to handle big matches. Venus didn't play for a while but she's not a beginner. I'm preparing for Serena to be a 100%. There’s no preference really. It's like you have preference more when you choose your dinner or lunch.

“It's definitely going to be more challenging being no.1. A lot of people are going to have more motivation against me. But I feel like being no.1 and want to work as I'm no.2.”

Belarusian Tatiana Poutchek revealed Azarenka now tops all popularity polls in her homeland and said: “Everybody was on TV watching the match. It was spectacular. Everybody was talking only about Victoria, about the first Grand Slam, about having her no.1 in the world for the first time. It’s huge.”

And unlike male counterparts such as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, the new top player had no intention of failing to serve her country in team competition so soon after an arduous spell in Australia that also saw her win the Sydney title.

“I'm a patriot of my country,” said Azarenka. “I think it's important for all the athletes to participate and play for your country. We do it pretty much all year long, like Olympic Games. But it's a special event. It's the only event where we play as a team. It's fun. I think it's important.”

Since her Melbourne triumph, Azarenka flew directly to Los Angeles where she appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres television show and attended a LA Lakers basketball game. After switching from West coast to East she returned to the practice court Thursday but is still on an emotional high.

“It's a great feeling,” she said. “I don't think it's really hit me yet. I've been busy doing a few off-court activities and also dealing a little bit with the jetlag from Australia, which is difficult.

“I'm really proud. It's a great feeling to have. But I just want to work hard and try to keep the same motivation as I have now.”

But Azarenka revealed she is considering amending her 2012 schedule and may miss the upcoming Middle East tournaments in Doha and Dubai to give herself sufficient time to rest and enjoy the celebrations in Belarus before the spring double of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells and Miami’s Sony Ericsson Open.

Sania Mirza has not really built upon the title she earned in her home city of Hyderabad in 2005, a win that made her a megastar in her native India but which remains her only WTA singles crown. Several injuries set her back but, although she has struggled in singles, she has excelled on the doubles court and is a member of the world’s top 10. So, that is where she is placing her priority as she strives to earn a place at the London Olympics.

"Almost a decade of professional tennis has taken its toll on my body," she said. "Three surgeries in the last four years haven't helped either. My body may not be able to cope with the load of playing both singles and doubles in the future. As this is the Olympic year, where qualifying for London is a top priority, I may need to focus on keeping my doubles ranking in the top 10 on 11th June, which is the cut-off date for qualification."

As her regular partner is Russia’s Elena Vesnina she has no chance of playing in the women’s doubles, so she is setting her sights on the mixed event where could partner Mahesh Bhupathi, Leander Paes or Rohan Bopanna.

"I believe we have a shot for a medal in the mixed doubles," she said. "Of course, I will also continue to play singles as and when I feel confident of my physical condition, but doubles will be my priority for now.

Singles - Quarterfinal: (1) T Berdych def. N Mahut 6-3 6-4

This has been a great event for Frenchmen, but of course Tomas Berdych is the strongest player in the field by a wide margin. Berdych has now matched his eighteenth event; additional points will count.

Singles - Quarterfinal: (2) G Simon def. G Rufin (WC) 7-6(7-5) 6-7(2-7) 6-2

Gilles Simon is definitely earning his points the hard way -- but at least he earned some. This match counted for him. Although he needs one more win to clinch the #12 ranking.

Singles - Quarterfinal: (3) G Monfils def. (8) J Nieminen 6-3 6-3

Still no points for Gael Monfils, but he costs Jarkko Nieminen any chance to rise above #45. Monfils still has a shot at #12 -- if he wins the title here and Gilles Simon loses his next match.

Singles - Quarterfinal: (7) P Kohlschreiber def. (4) R Gasquet 6-2 3-6 6-3

So close to having the top four seeds in the semifinal.... But Richard Gasquet loses his chance to make the Top Fifteen. Philipp Kohlschreiber is up to probably #31; a final would make him Top Thirty.

Doubles - Semifinal: (3) Hanley/J Murray def. Brown/Zovko 6-3 3-6 10-5 (Match TB)

For the first time since 2004 Roger Federer is playing a first-round match of the Davis Cup. The Fed is playing in Fribourg, Switzerland from February 10th through 12th. Federer has not been as committed to the Davis Cup as certain players (Rafael Nadal) but has shown effort as of late to prove he cares. In September Federer played in Australia during a playoff to help his home country, Switzerland, win. For the match in Fribourg Federer helped choose the red clay court surface believing it would play towards the Swiss’ strengths in their upcoming match against the U.S.

The U.S. team is in preparation to take on the powerful team of Roger Federer, best known for his long-time status as No.1 and No. 27 Stanislas Wawrinka. The U.S. team includes both singles and doubles players consisting of No.8 Mardy Fish, No.17 John Isner, doubles No.1 Mike Bryan, and 19 year old Ryan Harrison who currently holds the No. 96 ranking. As mentioned earlier Federer never focused on the Davis Cup nearly as much as he does ATP sanctioned events. The Swiss have never won the Davis Cup in all of Federer’s years playing. At the age of 30, currently holding the No.3 spot, and with retirement looming near perhaps Federer feels it’s time to add one last big title to his bag.

However there is also the possibility that Federer knows playing this year’s Davis Cup will be much easier with Rafael Nadal out of the picture. World No.1 and recent Australian Open winner, Novak Djokovic, also isn’t playing in Serbia’s Davis Cup match against Sweden. Andy Murray has also skipped out of Britain’s Davis Cup tie with Slovakia this month. Of the big four players only Roger Federer will play for a full three weeks during February.

Following the Davis Cup matches Federer is scheduled to play the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, an ATP 500 sanctioned event, from February 13th through the 19th. Directly after, Federer plays the final tournament of February—the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, another ATP 500 sanctioned event, from February 27th to March 3rd. Nadal is taking the entire month of February off, while Murray and Djokovic follow in similar suite, holding off until Dubai.

Even with the other three members of the top four out of the way for most of February, Roger Federer still has tough competition to face. The U.S. team members also know they have a stiff challenge ahead of them. U.S. captain Jim Courier stated, “We have the toughest draw you can have in Davis Cup. It's the ultimate test. It's going to be a big battle, but we have nothing to lose. We have to go out and lay it on the line and we know we are underdogs, but we'll give it a rip.” Federer will likely come back with a vengeance after his recent teary-eyed semifinals loss to Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open.
