A watch sponsorship deal signed just two days before the start of the U.S. Open has proved to be perfect timing for both New York champion Naomi Osaka and Japan’s Citizen watches.

With split-second accuracy, the exploratory contract came good in spectacular style as the unfancied Osaka beat Serena Williams in a foul-tempered battle from the American’s side to win a first Slam event title.

Already, the fiscal rewards are starting to flow to the 20-year-old champion. Osaka, headlining this week in Tokyo at the Pan Pacific event. The newest member of the ranking Top 10 will endorse the company’s Eco-Drive model as a brand ambassador.

She wore a bluetooth model of the line all the way to her winning U.S. Open final. “We are thrilled to have Naomi as part of the Citizen Watch family,” said Citizen U.S. President Jeffrey Cohen.

The No. 7 could not be more pleased with her deal: “I’m delighted to be a part of the auspicious team of Citizen brand Ambassadors (which also includes fellow WTA player Victoria Azarenka).

‘Better Starts Now’ fits perfectly with my philosophy of taking on new challenges to reach the top of the world in tennis. I hope this watch becomes a personal lucky charm from now on.”

The titanium sports watch is said to run for four years on a full charge – more than enough to get Osaka to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and beyond. It also features perpetual calendar, chronograph with an alarm and bluetooth connectivity in a relatively modest $700 package.

Osaka’s sponsorships with her birth nation of Japan run deep; she also has contracts with Yonex for racquets and food company Nissin.
