Jeanne Cherry was my friend. She was also a great friend of Tennis. She found a void and fixed it. Yes, there were tennis museums and fabulous hardworking curators. Our personal favorite was Honor Godfrey at Wimbledon. But what Jeanne achieved is she brought all the collectors of the world together. She connected all the dots. The book she and her eldest son Jimmy Cherry compiled is the Tennis Collectors BIBLE. [It changed everything for the better, a valuable tool to determine the memorabilia age, rarity, value.]

Jeanne loved tennis. She loved life. She mostly loved her fabulous family . We know Jeanne had storage units all over Los Angeles . We know the kids know where they are. Jeanne’s children and grandchildren were her most prized possessions. When Ferguson was visiting Jeanne would completely disappear off the radar. Every time.

Jeanne will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She brought tennis collecting up to speed. She became a historian along the way. At first she would get mad at me when I’d say that but in time she realized it.

She was truly a friend of the sport. She came to it late. But her passion knew no bounds. We were friends from the moment Her book came out in 1995. Our first phone conversation lasted 3 hours. Jeanne usually set a timer for 3-15 minutes per call. What a call. Two tennis “nerds” finding each other. I fascinated her based on my collecting anything tennis related from age 10. I had Almost Every issue of World Tennis. Of course it was Jeanne who filled in my blanks.( missing issues)

Without a doubt Jeanne was one of the nicest people to ever be on this earth. Now she is in heaven being welcomed by her friends. Gussy Moran and Bill Tilden and Helen Wills are waiting with Alice Marble and Judge Robert J. Kelleher. That’s just the ones at the pearly gates to the big grass court.

The photo in this post is a photo of Jeanne and I at Wimbledon. We shared many cups of tea there together . We also watched many matches there and at the Hurlingham club. Jeanne had the best twinkle in her eye. She will be greatly missed. Jeanne we will toast you at Wimbledon, but mostly we will miss you.

Gussy would have been proud of the heart of a champion that you showed.
