Players will wear patches in her honour

 

Montreal, February 6, 2014 – As part of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II tie between Canada and Serbia, Tennis Canada will pay tribute to one of its greatest ambassadors, Rene Simpson Collins, who passed away on October 17 following a year-long battle with brain cancer.

 

To honour the contributions of Rene Simpson Collins and recognize her courage and perseverance, Tennis Canada will pay tribute to her during the opening ceremonies on Saturday with her family in attendance at the Claude-Robillard Sports Complex. During the ceremony, Tennis Canada will announce the creation of the Rene Simpson Collins award which will be presented annually to a player who has showed promise, determination, courage, and pride. In addition, patches with the name Rene will be worn by the players as well as Tennis Canada and ITF staff.

 

As a pro, Simpson Collins reached a career-high ranking of no. 70 in April of 1989. In doubles, the Sarnia native ranked as high as no. 32 in the world. She won three WTA doubles titles and reached the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open. Simpson Collins took great pride in representing her country. She represented Canada in Fed Cup for 11 years and also served as team captain for nine years.

Les joueuses porteront des écussons en son honneur

 

Montréal, le 6 février 2014 – Dans le cadre de la rencontre du Groupe mondial II de la Fed Cup par BNP Paribas opposant le Canada à la Serbie, Tennis Canada rendra hommage à l’une de ses plus grandes ambassadrices, Rene Simpson Collins, décédée le 17 octobre dernier à la suite d’une bataille d’un an contre le cancer du cerveau.

 

Pour honorer la contribution de Rene Simpson Collins et pour se remémorer son courage et sa persévérance, Tennis Canada lui rendra hommage durant la cérémonie d’ouverture de samedi alors que ses proches seront présents au Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard. Tennis Canada annoncera alors la création du prix Rene Simpson Collins qui sera remis annuellement à la joueuse la plus prometteuse qui aura démontré de la détermination, du courage et de la fierté. De plus, des écussons affichant le nom de Rene seront portés par les joueuses, les employés de Tennis Canada ainsi que le personnel de l’ITF.

 

Chez les professionnelles, Simpson Collins s’est hissée au 70e rang mondial en avril 1989. En double, la native de Sarnia, en Ontario, a occupé le 32e échelon de la WTA, a conquis trois titres et a été quart de finaliste des Internationaux des États-Unis. De plus, elle ressentait beaucoup de fierté à défendre les couleurs de son pays comme en témoignent ses onze années de participation à la Fed Cup en tant que joueuse et ses neuf ans à la barre de l’équipe canadienne.
