Former world no.1 Ivan Lendl made an impressive return to tennis as he coached Andy Murray to just a few points from victory against eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the recent Australian Open.

But the 51 year-old has still found time to open his own International Junior Tennis Academy on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.

Lendl previously headed his Champions Academy at Vero Beach, Florida, which focused on both tennis and golf, with LPGA rookie Jessica Korda (daughter of former Australian Open champion Petr) the star pupil.

The first intake of students at Hilton Head includes youngsters from Canada, New Zealand and Russia as well as the United States. As Director of instruction Lendl will be intimately involved in developing each player in grades 5 through 12 and he said: “I am extremely excited to come to Hilton Head and open this academy.

“For juniors who love the game, love working hard and love challenges, we can promise a great experience on and off the court.”

Lendl’s synopsis shows he intends to concentrate on classic tennis fundamentals, leading edge biomechanics, strength training and fitness along with mental preparation. In addition pupils will attend the Heritage Academy for regular educational study.

Peter Orrell, President and CEO of Junior Sports Corporation, owner/operator of the Ivan Lendl IJTA said, “We are offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for passionate junior tennis players to reach their ultimate potential.”
