Singles – Second Round: (2) G Simon def. F Cipolla 6-3 6-2

It’s pretty close to a guarantee that a Top Fifteen player won’t gain any advantage from reaching the quarterfinal at a 250 point event. But anything else Gilles Simon does here counts — and he faces a wildcard next.

Singles – Second Round: (4) R Gasquet def. N Davydenko (WC) 6-3 6-4

We’d guess this means no return to the Top Fifty for Nikolay Davydenko. It must be rough — he’s on the Russian Davis Cup team, but it seems unlikely that he will play. Richard Gasquet has now matched his eighteenth event score; if he wins his next match, he will almost certainly hit the Top Fifteen.

Singles – Second Round: G Rufin (WC) def. (5) F Lopez 7-6(7-5) 6-3

By the looks of things, Feliciano Lopez could have used that first round bye that his current ranking would have earned them. This is a pretty tired-looking result. He loses the chance to rise above #15, and Gasquet could pass him.

Singles – Second Round: (7) P Kohlschreiber def. E Roger-Vasellin 6-4 7-5

Two more wins and Philipp Kohlschreiber is Top Thirty.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Fleming/Hutchins def. Bolelli/Ramos 6-1 6-2

It would be a tough day for seeds, but obviously Fleming/Hutchins were fine.

Doubles – First Round: Brown/Zovko def. (2) Cermak/Dlouhy 7-6(7-5) 6-7(4-7) 11-9 (Match TB)

Funny to see Lovro Zovko, who is a Croat, playing here rather than in Zagreb. It worked pretty well, though. Of course, facing a team containing slumping Lukas Dlouhy often works, these days.

Doubles – First Round: Huey/Skupski def. (4) Marx/Shamasdin 7-6(7-5) 6-1

Doubles – First Round: Rochus/Zelenay def. Brunstrom/Nieminen 64 7-6(11-9)

Doubles – First Round: Davydenko/Kunitsyn (Alt) def. Monfils/Monfils (WC) 6-2 6-1

Davydenko/Kunitsyn were truly last-minute fill-ins — the draw spot was still shown as open into the evening. But at least they’re touring players; Daryl Monfils is very new. We find ourselves wondering what it’s like to watch a pair of Monfilses throwing themselves around the court….
