Novak Djokovic can start his quest for a possible Grand Slam after winning en epic Australian Open final over Rafael Nadal. The victory which lasted for almost six hours vaults the world No. 1 to the head of the elite with Roger Federer and Nadal now definitely trailing in his wake.

“Under the circumstances it was definitely the greatest match I’ve ever played,” said the Serbian winner, who will take a few weeks off to let the enormity of his accomplishment sink in after winning the last three major titles. “The match that almost went six hours. Adding to all that, it was a grand slam final and a win against the biggest rival.”

An exhausted Djokovic, still running on adrenalin, fronted up the morning after the post-midnight triumph for a photo shoot before heading back to Europe with his girlfriend and team. “Today I only slept for a couple of hours. . . but it was worth it.

“All this effort that we both put in last night on the tennis court was incredible. It was something that we will both remember forever.”

Djokovic now owns five major titles, including four of the last five played. “Now I will have time to enjoy the success because it’s not just about winning a Grand Slam,” he said. “It’s really more than that. The way that we played makes me feel very proud of what I achieved.”
