Roger Federer—the world No. 3 but for many the greatest tennis player in history—celebrates his 30th birthday, and we look at Federer's highlights from the year.Roger Federer—the world No. 3 but for many the greatest tennis player in history—celebrates his 30th birthday today, and we take a look back at some of the highlights featuring the Swiss maestro’s successes in the past year.
Cincinnati: August 2010
Federer defeated Nikolay Davydenko, Marcos Baghdatis, and Mardy Fish in succession to claim his second title of 2010, kick-starting an impressive hard-court run as he went on to finish the year on a high note. The title in Cincinnati was only the beginning of what would be a very solid end of the year for the Swiss, a successful few months that he will look to recapture and even improve upon this time around.
Basel: November 2010
Federer experienced the sweet taste of revenge at the event in Basel, Switzerland. After dominating Alexandr Dolgopolov, Janko Tipsarevic, Radek Stepanek, and Andy Roddick to reach the final round, the Swiss star avenged his five-set semifinal loss to Novak Djokovic at the U.S. Open months earlier, by triumphing over the Serb, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, to win his fourth title of the year.
ATP World Tour Finals: November 2010
It was one of the most satisfying ways to wrap up the year when Federer won the World Tour Finals. His list of wins included straight-set victories over David Ferrer, Andy Murray, Robin Soderling, and Novak Djokovic, while Federer prevailed in three sets over Rafael Nadal in the final-round showdown, by a final score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Doha: January 2011
The Swiss maestro kicked off 2011 with a victory in Doha, where he cruised through the draw in straight sets over every opponent he faced: Thomas Schoorel, Marco Chiudinelli, Viktor Troicki, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Nikolay Davydenko. It was Federer’s first title of the year, his only one thus far, and he looked to be in strong form as he appeared unstoppable on court.
Roland Garros: May 2011
Federer put many of his critics’ doubts to rest at this year’s French Open. Although the Swiss did not claim the title, his four-set victory over Djokovic in the semifinals sent a clear message that Federer’s time at the top is not yet over. Furthermore, the world No. 3 put up a solid fight against Nadal in the final round in what many considered one of his best showings against Nadal at Roland Garros, where he lost this year by a score of 7-5, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-1.
What’s Next?
Federer remains the only man to have defeated new world No. 1 Djokovic this year, and he will kick off this year’s hard-court run with what he hopes will be a strong performance at the aptly-named Rogers Cup, where he will have the chance to face the top-ranked players in the world. The Swiss will seek to continue his momentum heading into the final Grand Slam of the year as he pursues the sixth U.S. Open title of his career.
