David Ferrer defeated Mardy Fish in four sets to secure victory in the Davis Cup quarterfinal between Spain and the United States. Ferrer won, 7-5, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-6 (5), on Sunday in Austin, Texas to give Spain the point that it needed to claim the win, as the Spaniards triumphantly moved ahead 3-1 in the tally.

With the U.S. trailing Spain, 1-2, heading into Sunday’s match-up, the task of keeping American hopes alive fell on Fish’s shoulders.

Fish had given up a 5-3 lead in the first set and lost the second set in a tiebreaker before claiming the third set to trail Ferrer, 5-7, 6-7 (3), 7-5, and although the American put up a strong fight in the fourth set, the Spaniard ultimately outplayed him on key points, nabbing the four-set victory.

In the fourth set, Ferrer earned an early break to go up 2-1, which he extended to 3-1 with a hold of serve.  After an easy service hold of his own, however, Fish saw a triple break point, and he secured the break when Ferrer yanked a swinging forehand volley wide, evening the score at 3-3.

With the players back on serve, Fish held to go ahead 4-3. After the changeover, excited fans did the wave as Fish raised his arm for them to stop so that Ferrer could serve. The Spaniard had a solid hold of serve, bringing the score to 4-4.

A forehand into the net from Fish in the next game sent the game to deuce, and the American hit a forehand long to give Ferrer a look at a break point, which the Spaniard claimed on a shot that landed just barely wide, as a visibly frustrated Fish took his seat on the changeover.

Fish attacked in the next game, however, getting a glimpse of a double break point and claiming the break on a double fault from Ferrer to level the score at 5-5. The American wrapped up the game that followed on a backhand into the net from the Spaniard.

With Ferrer serving to stay in the set as the match hit the four-hour mark, the Spaniard secured the hold to send the set into a tiebreaker.

Ferrer jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead, but with two powerful serves, Fish lessened the gap to 3-2. An overhead winner from the American evened the score at 3-3 as the players switched sides.

Fish dumped a backhand into the net on the next point and followed that with a forehand into the net, giving Ferrer a 5-3 lead. Undeterred, the American promptly claimed the next two points, bringing the score to 5-5 on a well-executed volley.

Ferrer won the next point on his serve, however, to see a match point at 6-5. The Spaniard prevailed on the rally that followed, falling to the ground in joy, his teammates throwing him into the air in celebration only moments later.

On Friday, Ferrer had defeated Andy Roddick, 7-6 (9), 7-5, 6-3, while Fish had fallen to Feliciano Lopez, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 8-6 in a close decision.
The next day, the Bryan brothers had kept the U.S. in the running by defeating Marcel Granollers and Fernando Verdasco, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Spain now claims its place in the World Group semifinals.

Ferrer is far superior to Fish. The Americans left on the team, Roddick, Fish, Querry, and Isner……..weak, weak, weak, and weak.  You have to do more than blast an ace now and then.  Their trainers forgot about ground strokes, vollies, net work, etc.  Really pathetic.

  • Mardyrox!!!

Spain got lucky…. Mardy Fish wasn’t at his best. They lucked out. Well, Roddick will still win. Even if it doesn’t change the outcome.

A well deserved win…USA outplayed by determination and mental strength.  Yes, I am an American.  Spain’s training program is excellent — even players from other countries go there and comment on the intensity of the practices.  Vamos!
