Mattek-Sands Exits in Madrid

After a tremendous run to the quarter-final stage, Bethanie Mattek-Sands finally exited the Madrid Open at the hands of Na Li.
Yet it was still a typically dogged and battling performance from the World No.41 as she went down in three sets to the sixth seed.
Mattek-Sands began her campaign in the Spanish capital with a superb victory over Serbian star Ana Ivanovic, recovering from a first set whitewash to prevail in three sets. She then followed that success up with a comfortable straight sets result against American compatriot Vania King, before scoring the biggest triumph of her career to date when ousting reigning French Open champion Francesca Schiavone.
But ultimately, the 26 year-old found Na Li, this year’s Australian Open runner-up, a bridge too far.
After losing the first set to the Chinese, Mattek-Sands fought back to take the second and with momentum on her side, it seemed as if another giant killing was on the cards. Na Li raised her game in the deciding set however and proved a little too strong for the American, coming through 6-4 3-6 6-4 overall to set up a semi-final clash with Czech Petra Kvitova who won another three set tussle against Dominika Cibulkova.
Despite the defeat, the popular Mattek-Sands has now laid major foundations for herself on a surface which she hasn’t been too confident on in the past.
Her excellent showing in Madrid will almost certainly boost her World Ranking position and another strong performance in Rome next week at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia could well see her seeded for the clay court’s showpiece event at Roland Garros in just over a fortnight’s time.
