Bethanie Mattek-Sands may have dropped her first-round match in the Estoril Open this week, but her many fans are rooting to see continued progress this year from the popular American, who is still on the road to recovery.
After suffering from back and hip pain a few weeks ago, 26-year-old Mattek-Sands pulled out of the Fed Cup and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in order to spend time recovering from her injuries in her hometown of Phoenix. Mattek-Sands was replaced by 22-year-old Vania King in the American Fed Cup lineup against Germany.
Although Mattek-Sands fell in the first round of the Estoril Open, her fans are encouraged to see her back on the court. Mattek-Sands, the No. 5 seed in the event, was edged out by Monica Niculescu of Romania, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, in a grueling match that lasted over three hours. It was certainly a promising sign to see Mattek-Sands bounce back in the second set and secure the break that she needed to even the match at one set apiece, even though Niculescu was able to dig deep in the third, breaking Mattek-Sands twice in that set for the victory.
Mattek-Sands is currently ranked No. 40 in the world, and she has a 10-7 record so far this year. She trails close behind her career-high ranking of No. 37, which she reached in March of 2009. If Mattek-Sands can fully rebound from her recent injuries, this may be the year that she climbs even higher in the rankings, and her fans certainly believe she is capable of doing so.
Mattek-Sands is known for her strong presence on and off the court, and many are therefore eager to see a full return to top shape from her. She has already made a name for herself in the tennis fashion world, her style ranging from knee-high socks to cheetah print, earning her an enthusiastic following in addition to a fair amount of controversy along the way.
We know that one thing is for certain: her fans are looking forward to both bold playing and bold fashion statements from Mattek-Sands as the year goes on.
