A Day in the Life of an Academy Player- Rain is No Fun!  |

I think all tennis players can agree that rain delays stink. That period of time where you are like, “maybe if we dry the courts and it doesn’t rain anymore, we could possibly play,” is the worst.

Today at the academy the forecast played mind games. One second it would be pouring, the next it would be clear again! Last night it was raining buckets, and I knew there was no way we could start at 8:00  am. We woke up today at the same time that we always do, and as I predicted our morning session of tennis was cancelled.

The camp did well to use our time wisely by lecturing on the importance of mental toughness, but everyone was restless; we all just  wanted to hit! One time they said we would hit at 9:00 am, then they
said 11:00 am, then they said 12:30 pm.

Finally, the time was set to 12:00 pm. As we began to warm up, the newly dry courts were not dry for long, as a moderate rain set in.

Great, just what we needed. Because the hard courts became slippery, players were put into large groups on the clay courts, which were able to withstand the rain.

I would rather just have a clear decision, either it’s wet and that equates to no tennis or it’s dry and time for tennis! The waiting around period is the worst.
