On a breezy night in Delray Beach, Tommy Haas couldn’t quite get a grip.
The long-time Bradenton, Florida resident recently became an American citizen and though he’s quite familiar with his surroundings, Haas can’t seem to sustain residency in the Delray Beach draw.
This time, Teimuraz Gabashvili sent the top-seeded Haas out of the International Tennis Championships on opening night, scoring a 7-6(3), 7-5 victory in one hour, 50 minutes. It was Gabashvili’s first ATP main-draw win of the season.
Twelve break points slipped from Haas grip. Gabashvili fought off eight of 10 break points in the first set.
Haas hammered the 104th-ranked Russian, 6-0, 6-3, in their only prior meeting at Indian Wells two years ago. But his inability to convert on pivotal points cost him in the rematch. Gabashvili will play either Ernests Gulbis or 17-year-old American qualifier Ryan Harrison in the round of 16.
It is the third straight opening-round exit in Delray Beach for Haas, who beat Vince Spadea and Xavier Malisse back to back to win the tournament title four years ago. Both Spadea and Malisse will be in action with first-round matches on Tuesday as wild card Spadea plays Santiago Giraldo and Malisse faces fourth-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the 11 a.m. match on Stadium Court.
